La Descarga • Cuban meets Dominican

Augsburg, Germany

A club-sized weekend pairing Cuban with Dominican: timba with bachata, son with merengue, and nothing else in the room.

The pairing is the whole idea, and it is narrower than it first looks. Timba against bachata, son against merengue, with bolero, chachachá and reggaetón around the edges. No kizomba, no linear salsa, none of the catch-all SBK programming that most German weekends run. Two Caribbean traditions, deliberately set side by side. It is run by Baila Augsburg and doubles as the school's anniversary, which explains the scale: a club rather than a hotel, and a crowd that largely knows each other before the first night. An intensive bootcamp opens it on the Friday evening, workshops and socials fill the Saturday, and it closes on the Sunday around six with a small social on site rather than a late party. Worth knowing if you were planning to travel home Monday. Late November puts it in the quietest stretch of the European calendar, when almost nothing else is running between the autumn festivals and Christmas.
